What’s New August 12, 2017

Between one thing and another I haven’t been keeping up so it has been a while since the last update.

In May we said good by to our beloved Barclay. In April Barclay started having mini seizures or strokes. The seizures or strokes were occurring more and more frequently until he had one finale episode on May 4, 2017. He would have been eight years old in June. It was a sad time for all of us but especially for his special needs sister Blossom. She kept looking for him for almost a month even though she saw him after he passed.

The D litter girls have been doing well other than some needle grass problems. Dora had a needle grass awn in her paw and the vet had to sedate her to get it out because her paw was so tender. Dallas had one behind her elbow but stood still while they removed it.

We haven’t taken them to any shows because things keep cropping up. They really don’t mind not going. They love meeting people and don’t mind showing but the car ride ugh. They prefer going down to the pond and racing around trying to find what ever comes in during the night.

Dawn has taken up fishing. She stands on the bank looking in the water at the fish then leaps in when the fish come close to the bank. So far she hasn’t caught anything. Diana likes to wade out in the water and just stand there. Allen says she is drowning her fleas.

Otterhounds laying around

With the hot weather all the dogs like to come in after lunch and lounge around the house. When you get ten dogs lounging around it gets rather hard to move.

After Clara had to be spayed in January, we started thinking about breeding Cheyenne again. The D girls will not be old enough to breed until they are three in December of 2018. Then we will have to wait for them to come in heat. That could mean two years before they could have a litter.

The vet checked Cheyenne over and said he saw no problem with breeding her again. Our reproduction specialist said she saw no problems but recommended that the breeding occur before Cheyenne turned six.

The stud list was gone over and it was decided to use the same stud we had chosen for Clara – CT Ch. Riverrun Finnegan VO CGC NAP NAJP VOX plus a couple more titles.

We contacted Finnegan’s owner and plans were made to breed Cheyenne when she came in heat in early June. Like most Otterhounds she had her own ideas. Instead of coming in heat in early June as expected she finally came in on August 3.

On August 10 Cheyenne went in for surgical insemination. Everything went well and Cheyenne is recovering nicely from her surgery. Now comes the hard part waiting to see if there will be puppies. It will be a long 63 days.
